E conomy Energy EnvironmentSynopsis of Meeting held on April 16, 2009: Personal action plans were discussed for each of these three areas: Economy, Environment, and Energy. After much discussion of the current state of the economy and ideas shared about the economy, several attendees agreed to contact state and federal officials in support of President Obama's Economy Plan.. One outcome may be an environmental/energy action plan to capture the water power from the waterfall behind the recycling center for the purpose of producing electricity for the recycling center. Another outcome will be a local program that will educate people about CFL (Compact Fluorescent Light) bulbs and begin to raise money to help low-income families to purchase these CFL bulbs. Other items discussed were: 1. The need for people other than our solid waste coordinator to visit our schools to talk about recycling in particular and energy and the environment in general. 2. A program that would provide local residents the opportunity to insulate ducts, attics, walls, and ceilings; replace inefficient appliances (furnaces, refrigerators, water heaters, light bulbs) with efficient models and heat pumps; and for the infiltration and repair, weather-stripping, and replacement of leaky doors and windows (this information is a summary of a section taken from the Kentucky Energy Corps web site. 3. Sara Pennington, a representative from Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, spoke to the group about Kentuckians for the Commonwealth (click on the logo below for more info about this group).
In 1994, Congress designated the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday a national day of community service further commemorating a man who lived his life in service to others. As a tribute to that legacy and to the very real needs of our nation, the President-elect and Vice President-elect are calling on citizens and volunteers across the country to plan, organize and stage non-partisan, volunteer community service events in their neighborhoods from Saturday, January 17th through Monday, January 19th, 2009 to celebrate the life and lessons of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. While this call begins with service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President-elect Obama is asking for more than just a single day of service. He is calling on all Americans to make a continued commitment to service. This is an excellent way for volunteers to engage their community and collaborate with local organizations to create service opportunities.
